Mai Chau is a small beautiful valley that locates on the west side of Hoa Binh province, and it is far away from Hanoi about 140km. Due to it is not far from the capital, people from Hanoi could choose two ways to come to Mai Chau by motorbike or by bus (of course if visitors book a tour, tour guides will prepare means of transport for them). We have three perfect periods in a year to visit Mai Chau. The first period is from March to April; it is the time when Ban flowers bloom within the fresh, cool air.
The second term is in September when "Independence Day" occurs with a lot of exciting activities. The last period is from October to December; it is the winter when peach and plum blossoms bloom all over the small valley.
Places to explore
Thung Khe mountain pass
With the height of 1000 meter above than sea level, Thung Khe Pass gives visitors the whole beautiful view of the small valley. The unique thing of Thung Khe Pass is weather changes quickly like four seasons in one day. On the road, visitors could call for a halt and get some "fast food" of the local such as Lam rice, boiled corn, and boiled sugar cane to enjoy with the romantic view.
Lac and Poom Coong mountain villages
These two are most famous and biggest tourict attraction in Mai Chau. The attractive factors of these two villages are that the houses are on stilts and the customs and typical life of the ethnic people here. Lac village is the home of the "black" Thai; their life depends on making brocade and rice cultivation. Therefore, the picture of immensely green fields and Thai women weaving on the steps of their houses is the things that visitor can easily catch. Coming to Poom Coong village, visitors could quickly notice the similarities with Lac village, the culture, the customs, everything, but the overall sanitation and the awareness of the people about keeping their community clean being the most recognizable factor.
Mo Luong and Chieu caves
These two caves in Mai Chau is incredibly huge and gorgeous. They have many beautiful stalactites in various forms and colors. Moreover, at the end of Mo Luong Cave visitors could contemplate an underground water spring which flows and creates an underground lake.

Houses on stilts
House on stilts of Thai ethnic people is always built above high ground about two meters by solid wood. With floors made of bamboo, the roof is covered by long grass and rattan leaves; sometimes the roof could be modernized with tiles. When visitors come to any Thai people home, the host would invite them to wash their feet before taking their first step into the house.
Making brocade and clothing
Clothes of Thai people are made out of silk. Clothes of men are brocade shirt with two colors of black and dark blue and are decorated with silver buttons. While clothes of women have more colors and forms, their traditional dress is usually long to the ankles, the upper hem of the dress is weaved with many beautiful and colorful patterns that bring out the lovely curved line of beautiful women. To create a good brocade fabric, Thai people have to choose the right time to take silk cord from caterpillars, then spin and dye it by many kinds of leaves that made from the forest. It is the hard work requires skillful hands to create.
Cuisine and music party of Thai ethnic people
The most famous rice of Thai ethnic people would be the Lam rice which is put in a neohouzeaua pipe and roasted until done. This rice is eaten with Muong pork roast, a local specialty of Thai - Muong ethnic people. This meat is taken from small kind of pig that feasted in the natural condition, so it is clean and delicious. Sometimes, they can use bitter bamboo sprout like a salad, and this kind of salad taste like "love" because when you bite it at first, you would feel a little bitter, after you swallow it, the taste would change to sweetness. Because the Thai ethnic people love music and party, in the night, the usually hold a party in their village near the camp fire. Their traditional musical instruments are Cong; Chieng made from bronze, and Khen (Pan-pipe) made from bamboo tubes.
